TechGirlz workshop at library introduced girls to coding opportunities

Allie Feldman, a sophomore at Pelham Memorial High School, wants girls to start learning to code at a young age. Her reason for doing so is that they can secure more advanced jobs in technology.

On Dec. 11 and Dec. 14, Feldman offered a workshop that was powered by TechGirlz. The free program was held at the Pelham Public Library for sixth through eighth graders.

TechGirlz’s mission is to inspire girls to explore computer programming to further expand their future opportunities. TechGirlz created a program called TechShopz in a Box that allows teens to hold workshops in their town library or middle school based off of TechGirlz’s workshop plans.

Feldman’s workshop was a beginner lesson called “YOU Can Code.” The session used a computer language called Blockly. This is a drag and drop language that is equivalent to another coding program called Scratch. Blockly has a mission similar to TechGirlz to inspire tomorrow’s programmers.

Techz Girls provides a variety of different ways to learn coding, ranging from podcasting to game design. For upcoming TechGirlz workshops check out www.techgirlz.org.
