The Board of Education met on Wednesday to officially instate Sean Llewellyn as the Middle School Assistant Principal, as well as to receive updates from the superintendent and the various committees.

Multiple board members spoke up in favor of Mr. Llewellyn, and Middle School Principal Lynn Sabia also spoke about her relationship with Mr. Llewellyn and his excellent work in the district. Prior to being instated as temporary Assistant Principal at the middle school, Mr. Llewellyn was integral to the installment of the International Baccalaureate, and his work in the department was recognized.

Superintendent Cheryl Champ updated the board on district goings-on through her report. This included the announcement of a new survey for 8th-12th graders regarding social-emotional wellness, the funding of which has been fully covered by the Pelham Civics and should be administered sometime in the spring. Champ also presented the single-page school calendar for the 2019-2020 school year, which has students going back to school the Thursday after labor day, and the last day on June 26th, as decided by New York State. The schedule also allows a buffer for five snow days, should they be needed. Champ concluded with the safety and traffic reminder, witch will be sent out sometime after the upcoming break.

The various committees also provided updates. These broached a range of subjects, from the analysis of Chromebook roll-out and which grades receive the laptops, to the adjustments to elementary science testing- which will, after this year, be administered in 5th grade, not 4th. The selection of an external auditor was also in progress, and it was recommended that the existing external audit company should remain for the Pelham school district.

There were brief updates on 21st century learning, and socio-emotional wellness within the district. These were followed by the updates on Finance and Facilities. This entailed discussion of the aforementioned audit committee, as well as a proposal to appoint a new vendor for food services, given that the current vendor’s contract ends in June of this year. This lead to further discussion on the selection of a food vendor and the New York State laws that regulate that process.

Several personnel recommendations were made and voted on, along with the acceptance of donations from various sources. Lastly, the appointments of committees on special education, section 504, and preschool special education were all made.
