New York State Science Honor Society
The first statewide science honor society in the United States is the Science Teachers’ Association of New York State (STANYS) supported New York State Science Honor Society.
Established in 1991, it is also endorsed by the New York State Science Supervisors Association and the New York State Assembly.
Its purpose is to encourage an interest and understanding of science and science-related careers, as well as to recognize the academic achievement in science of high school students.
Students who are members are enthused about research, participate in science-related activities, have demonstrated achievement in science learning, are service-minded, and present excellent personal character.

Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society
The purpose of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society is to honor excellence in the Social Studies. The name, RHO KAPPA, is taken from two words of Semitic origin. RHO is derived from “resh” meaning “head” and KAPPA is derived from “kapf” which means “palm of the hand.” Both of these terms symbolize our firm belief that knowledge without service is useless.
The principal purpose of RHO KAPPA is to stimulate a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of all the academic disciplines comprising the social studies curriculum. Rho Kappa is based on four pillars: Truth, Knowledge, Wisdom and Service. In Social Studies we seek the truth. The truth we seek is untarnished by prejudice or bias. This search that leads us to a greater understanding of the world and humanity’s place in it.
Members of RHO KAPPA have the distinction of being individuals who seek knowledge in their youth, the second pillar of Rho Kappa. Students build upon their knowledge and understanding of the past in order to create a future of their own and that of the world in which we live. The third pillar is Wisdom. Wisdom is the tool we use to discern what is true and how to value that truth. Members of RHO KAPPA also display the fourth pillar or true civic engagement in school or community.

Quixotic Chapter of the National English Honor Society
The National English Honor Society (NEHS), founded in 1776 and sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, is America’s first honor society. The National English Honor Society (NEHS) recognizes the academic accomplishments of America’s high school students and promotes their continuing interest in English Language Arts. NEHS is the only high school honor society exclusively for students of English.
The NEHS motto “gelast sceal mid are” is Old English for: “duty goes with honor.” The motto represents one of the earliest forms of our language, and affirms and celebrates an obligation to use one’s gifts in service to others. Service to peers, school, and community are part of the NEHS mission. The mission of NEHS is to confer national distinction upon secondary school students for high achievement in the English Language Arts; to build a national community of academic achievers; to provide, through local chapters, cultural stimulation in high school environments; encourage interest in the English Language Arts; and to serve society by fostering literacy.
